History of the Mozambique Mission

Located in the capital of Maputo, the ANC mission in Mozambique was one of the earlier missions to work as a liaison between the Mozambique government and the struggle towards liberation. The records of this mission therefore focus upon the ANC’s lobbying of the Mozambique government and its political parties against the South African Apartheid regime. The series also highlights the life of Moses Mabhida, who was a leader both in the ANC and the SACP while in exile.

Scope and Content Note

The Mozambique Collection is composed of four series CorrespondenceNews ClippingsPhotographs, and Subject Files.

Correspondence Series I covers the period between 1982-1990, the internal and external correspondence demonstrates the ANC’s relationship with Mozambique, in particular the Frelimo Party and AMASP. Also located in this series is internal correspondence, which details some of the daily functions of the mission.

The News Clippings Series II consists of exerts from various periodicals pertaining to the ANC, South Africa, and Mozambique. One folder solely focuses on Mozambique and another pertains to the regional politics between Mozambique and South Africa. This series spans from 1982 until 1989.

Photographs Series III Photographs of several ANC and SACP leaders are highlighted in this series, including several of Moses Mabhida, as well as Joe Slovo and Oliver Tambo. Also included are photographs of important events or commemorations such as Yusuf Dadoo’s funeral, and 70th anniversary of the ANC. The majority of are undated.

The Subject Files Series IV highlights the various strengths of this collection and covers the years between 1979-1993. For example, papers pertaining to the Nkomati Accord, a non-aggression and good neighbourliness pact demonstrate the association between the South African government with the Mozambique government. Pamphlets and a brief biography of Moses Mabhida are also included in this series. The series is comprised of press statements, bulletins, papers, reports, as well as policy statements. See Box 13 of additional material that was added to this record group.

Additions – scope and content

These additional boxes are from the Mozambique collection that was discovered later. In arranging the collection, Mozambique is the record group, under the record group we find sub-groups namely (i) Chief Representative’s Office, (boxes, 1 – 14), (ii) ANC Education Department (boxes 15-16), (iii) ANC Health Department (box 17), (iv)ANC Logistic Department (box, 18), (v) ANC Youth Section (box, 19), (vi) ANC Women’s Section (box, 20), (vii) Publications (box, 21) and (viii) Travel Documents/Photographs (boxes, 22-25). Underneath the sub-groups are the series that are arranged according to format. The format is informed by whether a document falls under correspondence, discussion documents, financial documents, minutes, reports, statements. Chief Representative’s Office and Education Department have series such as correspondence, financial documents, minutes, reports and statements. Owing the substantial number of folders to create series in other sub-groups (ANC Health Department, ANC Logistic Department, ANC Women’s Section, ANC Youth Section, Publication,), the decision to list the folders alphabetically according to title was therefore taken.
